XR in Manufacturing Case Study: Microsoft and Autoliv

In the manufacturing industry, data is critical. The more information a company can access, the faster it can produce high-quality solutions for its target audience. However, effectively leveraging insights from streams of raw data isn’t always simple.

Actively converting huge volumes of intelligence into actionable guidance for teams takes significant skill, and the right technology. Fortunately, Autoliv China, an innovator in the manufacturing world, discovered a new way to unlock the power of its data, with Microsoft.

Leveraging the Microsoft landscape and support from DataMesh, and the Hololens 2 Mixed Reality headsets, Autoliv implemented the power of digital twin technology, 3D data visualization, and artificial intelligence into their operations on a phenomenal scale.

Transforming the Workplace with Data-Driven Solutions

Autoliv knew mixed reality and digital twin technology was the key to helping them solve challenges faster in the manufacturing space. However, finding and implementing the correct solution was problematic. The brand needed a solution capable of connecting IT and OT data systems, supporting remote collaboration, and delivering predictive insights.

The organization had already identified the HoloLens 2 headsets and Dynamics 365 Remote Assist technologies as foundational tools to support with virtual employee collaboration and issue remediation. However, they also wanted to create their own digital twin platform, ready to generate 3D CAD/BIM models with dynamic capabilities.

The business needed a low-code metaverse platform, which could assist them in rethinking how they delivered training and support to employees throughout their diverse ecosystem. Fortunately, they found the solution they needed from Microsoft’s partner, DataMesh.

Autoliv China and DataMesh collaborated on the design of a next-generation digital twin platform, suitable for creating both a digital factory and mixed reality training opportunities, based on the HoloLens 2 headset technology. The resulting solution allowed the company to produce a valuable tool for immersive interaction, training, and remote collaboration.

Redefining Productivity for Frontline Workers

Thanks to Microsoft’s hardware and software solutions and DataMesh’s expertise, Autoliv was able to successfully produce the ultimate MR and digital platform for their teams. The company believes this technology will help them to achieve higher levels of operational efficiency, while reducing resource consumption across procurement, production, and R&D projects.

Not only do employees benefit from a more immersive environment where they can collaborate and instantly access crucial data, but they also have access to valuable training solutions. The HR managers in the company have created a host of new MR training courseware on the Hololens 2, augmenting the number of new hires who can rapidly develop new skills by more than 5 times.

At the same time, the metaverse solution means training professionals no longer need to visit a site to support employee onboarding. Professionals can deliver real hands-on experiences to new staff members, without introducing risk or using vital resources.

Frontline workers even have the power to build their own applications and edit digital twin scenarios with zero coding, allowing the entire team to contribute to the optimization of maintenance strategies and training initiatives in a host of scenarios.
